Top Tips for Fixing Your Computer Before Calling A Computer Technician

If you aren’t an expert with computers and yours goes wrong, it can be hard to know what to do. Luckily, many issues can be resolved by simply following this advice.

Use Google

Good is often very helpful when researching detailed issues and error codes. It may not help so much with generic questions, so add lots of detail.

Restoring Your System

The inbuilt Windows roll-back feature undoes recent hardware and registry changes and the computer’s software setup without impacting on files.

Using Safe Mode

During boot-up, tap F8 and access the boot menu. Select Safe Mode and a stripped-down Windows version is launched that keeps background utilities and drivers to a minimum. This mode is useful for uninstalling devices or programs and running fixes when you fail to access Windows normally.

Overheating

When your PC seems to crash randomly, it could be overheating. Buy a laptop cooler or fan if this could be the reason.

Scanning On-Demand

Spyware and viruses cause many issues from unexplained reboots to slow performance. Your anti-spyware and antivirus tools must be kept up-to-date and you should run on-demand scans regularly too.

Background Programs

Slow performance that worsens with time is often due to programs running in the background. Check Task Manager to see which programs are using your CPU and RAM.

Selective Startups

Look through your Startup folder to spot and remove programs you don’t need to be launched alongside Windows.

Restoring Files

When a file is deleted by Windows, it won’t move the 0s and 1s. It will just remove references to them, marking the disc space as free. If the file hasn’t be overwritten, it’s possible to download a free tool to recover it.

Windows Isn’t Starting

There are several system recovery options that come with Windows to use when the operating system isn’t booting properly. When booting, tap F8, select Last Known Good Configuration and unplug all of your non-essential peripherals.

Beeping Motherboard

If your computer beeps and shuts itself down before Windows can load, you can find out what the problem is by Googling the number of beeps you hear.

Malfunctioning Hardware

If your printer, camera, mouse or other device is malfunctioning, try a different USB port or another computer to see where the fault could lie. If it isn’t the device itself, it could be the drivers. Install updates from the manufacturer’s website. Alternatively, a new automatically installed driver could be causing issues. You can roll it back to an older version by finding the hardware in the Device Manager, choosing Properties and opening the Driver tab.

Screen Problems

If your display isn’t working properly, the graphics card could be at fault. Alternatively, it could be the monitor or connecting cable. Using another cable could help, or you could switch to the onboard graphics to work out the source of the problem. If the screen or monitor turns out to be at fault, you’ll need to go to a professional repairer.

Follow these tips to see if you can get your computer running properly again. If you’re still struggling, you’ll need to go to a professional repairer to resolve the issues.
